About the Event

An Adventure that includes Sphagnum Moss Planting with the National Trust.

Not only will this adventure guide you to explore the stunning beauty of Holcombe Moor, but you will contribute to helping to lock carbon in the ground; create better habitats for wildlife; and reduce local flood risk.

We're thrilled to be partnering with the National Trust to offer this opportunity that will provide insight to their fascinating peatland restoration project that covers a massive 135 hectares.

You will take part in a simple task of planting Sphagnum Moss plugs - these plants will then contribute to the eventual accumulation of peat which traps carbon and hence contributes to our fight against climate change!

Expect to cover a distance of around 5 miles on open moorland terrain that has plenty of 'boggy' patches.

Kit requirements:

Specific details and requirements for the event will be emailed prior to the date however, we suggest that you bring the following:

• A good 'pokey stick' to create holes for planting

• Marigolds to keep hands dry and warm while planting

• Waterproof jacket and trousers

• Spare warm layer

• Hat and gloves

• Fully charged mobile phone, with OS Maps or OS Locate app installed

• Suitable footwear

• Personal snacks/food

Route

As above, the specific details for the route will be emailed prior to the date.

This will include the link to the intended route; meeting location; and specific requirements for that event.

Duration

The activity will involve a Hike to the planting site; a period of planting Sphagnum Moss; and then the return walk to where we started.

We anticipate the whole activity to last between 4.5 and 5 hours.

There is no charge for this event however, we do welcome donations.

As a non-profit, charitable organisation, dedicated to using the outdoors to enrich lives, the proceeds from all our adventures help fund and sustain our youth service and other community activities that promote the benefits of embracing the outdoors.

With the emphasis on exploration to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing and less about competitive times or distances, our adventures are all led by a qualified, knowledgeable and experienced team who will provide encouragement, support and humour along the way.

If you haven’t joined us before, check out this video to get a sense of what we’re about - we look forward to you joining us for this adventure in collaboration with the National Trust.
